Sonnenhof Aspach: energy-efficient lighting control made to measure

Task

  • Modernization of the lighting control in the hotel, wellness and event area

Solution

  • KNX system with MIX-2 actuators, binary inputs, thePrema KNX presence detectors and thePassa KNX corridor detectors
  • Conventional lighting control via thePrema presence detectors, thePassa corridor detectors and ELPA staircase light timers

For over 70 years, and now in its third generation, the Ferber family business in Kleinaspach has been writing a success story with the Sonnenhof Aspach. Guests can find a wide range of hotel, wellness, restaurant and event facilities here. The event location "Bergwerk", for example, is known far beyond the region's borders, where pop star Andrea Berg and other top acts regularly celebrate  concert nights.

Theben quality impresses

As part of extensive refurbishment and extension work, the lighting control system in some buildings was also put to the test in 2022/23. Elektrotechnik Stolz from Steinheim an der Murr, a trusted Theben partner for many years, was commissioned to plan and implement the project. Owner Holger Stolz explains why: "I first came into contact with Theben products, especially the MIX KNX actuators, in 2010. Back then, I installed them in projects and they still work today - 14 years later. Since then, we have also used presence detectors, motion detectors, LED spotlights and other Theben components. What can I say: We and our customers are very satisfied. We also particularly enjoy working with family-run companies that manufacture in Germany."

Lighting under control with KNX, DALI and conventional technology

In the Sonnenhof Aspach project, three areas of the site were equipped with new lighting control: the hotel area, which was extended by 40 rooms, and the wellness area, with a total area of 3,900 square meters were equipped with a KNX installation. Modular KNX MIX-2 actuators for switching and dimming as well as binary inputs for controlling the DALI system were used here. In addition, thePrema presence detectors and thePassa corridor detectors ensure automated, energy-efficient lighting control in the rooms and corridors.

In the "Bergwerk" event hall with space for up to 600 people, the lighting control system was brought up to date using conventional components rather than KNX. The reason for this is the elaborate and complex lighting technology for events, which is controlled manually. The conventional versions of thePrema presence detectors and thePassa corridor detectors were used here. In addition, genuine Theben classics were used for staircases and outdoor lighting: the ELPA 6 plus and ELPA 8 staircase light timers.

Optimal support for project success

And what is Holger Stolz's conclusion? "We are extremely satisfied with how the project was realised together with Theben. Theben's field service supported us right from the start in selecting and planning the right components for the various areas. We are already looking forward to the next joint projects!"
